The Best Roller Skates for Kids Learning to Skate

Do you have a kid who wants to learn how to roller-skate but don’t know where to start?

Roller skating is a super fun way to exercise, but before you can start rolling around the rink or neighborhood, you'll need the right pair of roller skates.

With so many different skates out there, it can be confusing figuring out which ones are best for learning. Don't worry - this guide will help you pick out the perfect skates!

There’s no ‘right’ age to learn to skate, but six is a great age to start looking for your first pair of skate.

Quad Skates with Support

When you're just starting out on roller skates, you'll want a pair of"quad" skates that have four wheels.

Look for skates with a nice sturdy boot that comes up over your ankles to keep them supported

A high-top boot with laces or velcro straps you can tighten is ideal for beginners.

This extra support will help prevent rolling or twisting your ankles as you find your balance.

Bigger, Softer Wheels

The wheels on your skates make a big difference too. For learning, you'll want bigger wheels around 58-62mm in size.

Bigger wheels are a bit more stable and easier to roll over cracks or bumps.

The wheels should also be on the softer side with a lower durometer rating like 78A-85A.

Softer wheels grip the floor better so you won't go slip-sliding all over if you lean too hard.

Protective Gear

No matter how old your kid is, safety gear is important while skating.

Along with a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards are also really important, especially starting out so that they can fall without getting too banged up while build their skating skills and confidence.

Size Up

Top tip - size up at least half a size, but often a full size when buying rollerskates.

Rollerskates that are too snug can restrict foot movement and be uncomfortable for small feet. You’ll also have room to grow!

Inline Blades for Beginners

If you think you might want to try inline skates or "blades" instead of quads, there are some awesome options there too!

Inline skates have a steeper learning curve - but the payoff is greater speed!

Look for inline skates with a firm boot that has a lace-up or buckle closure.

Having 3-4 wheels in a straight line takes some getting used to, so bigger 70-80mm wheels set further apart can help you stay balanced.

Most decent beginner inline blades come with a brake on the back too.
