How to Measure Your Child's Head for a Helmet

To ensure your child's safety while riding a bike or scooter, selecting the right helmet size is crucial.

We've written a quick guide for parents on how to measure your child's head correctly and determine the appropriate helmet size based on age groups.

How to Measure Your Child's Head for a Helmet

measuring a child
  1. Gather Your Tools : You will need a flexible measuring tape. If you don’t have one, you can use a piece of string and measure it against a ruler.

  2. Position the Tape : Wrap the measuring tape around your child's head, positioning it about an inch above their eyebrows. Ensure it sits level around the head, just above the ears.

  3. Take the Measurement : Record the circumference where the tape overlaps. This measurement will help you determine the correct helmet size.

  4. Check for Comfort : The tape should be snug but not tight, allowing for comfort while ensuring an accurate measurement.

These sizes may vary slightly between brands -  so we've broken this down for the Alpina and Giro helmets that we sell at KiDSiE:

Fitting the Helmet Correctly

  1. Positioning : The helmet should sit level on your child's head, about two finger widths above their eyebrows.

  2. Straps : Adjust the straps so they form a V shape around each ear and are snug but comfortable under the chin.

  3. Retention System : Many helmets come with an adjustable retention system at the back. Ensure this is snug enough to keep the helmet in place without causing discomfort.

  4. Final Check : Have your child move their head side to side and nod up and down. The helmet should not shift significantly during these movements

Importance of a Proper Fit

A well-fitted helmet is vital for maximum protection. An ill-fitting helmet can slide off during an accident or fail to absorb impact effectively, increasing the risk of injury.

Always prioritise fit over style or size adjustments for growth; helmets that are too large won't provide adequate protection.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your child has a properly fitting helmet that provides both safety and comfort while they enjoy their biking or scooting adventures!
